History

Gosling's Dark Rum traces its roots back to the Gosling family's establishment of a wine and spirits importer in Bermuda in 1806. Some time after 1857 the firm began producing its own barrels of smooth black rum from a unique recipe. The liquor was only sold by the barrel or in customer-supplied bottles until after World War I, when left-over champagne bottles from the British Royal Navy Officer's Club were reused for sale. Although the bottle read simply "Old Rum", customers knew it by its black wax seal. Not until 1950 was the brand renamed "Black Seal" and marked with a whimsical logo of a seal balancing a rum barrel on its nose. Gosling's rum has become Bermuda's best seller and its largest export.

In the same years after World War I, the Dark 'n' Stormy cocktail was invented, mixing smoky Black Seal rum and local ginger beer over ice. Barritt's Ginger Beer is a traditional favorite, but in 2009 Gosling's introduced its own brand of ginger beer to be used as a mixer or as a stand-alone drink. The drink is made by Polar Beverages of Worcester, MA.

Review

A fresh and pungent ginger aroma. Ooh, this is tasty! It's got a little pepper to sizzle on the tongue but not so much to burn your throat. Sweet at first but with more sips the pepper and ginger become more pronounced.

A refreshing beverage: stimulates the brain and warms the gullet. It's a well-balanced ginger ale.
